Gospel Conversation - Part 9 (Preaching the Gospel to a Cultist)

Preaching the Gospel to a Cultist

Secret cults and confraternities are not just a social problem; they are a spiritual stronghold. Whether it’s called Black Axe, Aiye, Buccaneers, Eiye Confraternity, or any other name, these groups often thrive on fear, blood oaths, and a false sense of brotherhood. Members can feel trapped, convinced there is no way out without death or shame.

But the Gospel of Jesus Christ is God’s power to save anyone, even the person deep inside the grip of a cult. The Bible says:

“For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.” Luke 19:10

1. Understand the Real Battle

The battle is not against the cultist’s personality but against the spiritual powers that hold them. Paul reminds us:

“For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers…” Ephesians 6:12

Approach with the mindset that you are confronting a lie with the truth of Christ, not attacking an individual’s dignity.

Start with Relationship, Not Argument

Cultists are often suspicious of outsiders. Gaining trust is key. Listen to them, understand their fears, and look for opportunities to share your life in Christ. Jesus often began by connecting with people’s needs before unveiling the Kingdom.

A direct confrontation about their cult involvement too early may only cause defensiveness. Instead, let the light of Christ in you provoke curiosity.

Present Jesus as Lord and Liberator

Many cult members joined seeking power, protection, or belonging. Show them how Jesus offers true power (Acts 1:8), true covering (Psalm 91), and true family (Mark 10:29–30).

Emphasize that the blood of Jesus speaks better things than any blood oath (Hebrews 12:24). The cult’s promise is a counterfeit; Jesus is the real.

Use Testimonies and the Word

If possible, share the stories of ex-cultists who are now following Christ. Testimonies break the lie that “no one ever leaves.”

Scriptures to use:

  • John 8:36 – “If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”

  • Colossians 1:13 – “He has rescued us from the dominion of darkness…”

  • 2 Corinthians 5:17 – “If anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come…”

Engage in Prayer and Fasting

Breaking cult bondage is not done by mere persuasion — it is a spiritual deliverance. Jesus said,

“This kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting.” — Matthew 17:21

Pray for God to open their eyes, break fear, and dismantle spiritual covenants.

Be Ready for the Cost

A cultist leaving may face retaliation or threats. The church must be ready to stand with them, offer protection if needed, and integrate them into a loving community.

Conclusion
No one is beyond the reach of Christ’s grace. Paul was once a persecutor, yet became an apostle (1 Timothy 1:13-16). That same transforming power is available for the cultist today. Our task is to preach Christ boldly, love persistently, and trust the Holy Spirit to break chains.
