Gospel Conversation - Part 11 (How to Preach the Gospel to a Child)

How to Preach the Gospel to a Child

When we share the gospel with a child, it’s important to explain not just what sin does, but what sin is nature inside all of us that makes us want to do wrong things. And salvation is God’s wonderful way of taking away that wrong nature and giving us a new heart to love Him and others.

Explain Sin as a Nature

Instead of just saying sin is “doing bad things,” help the child understand that sin is like a broken part inside all people that makes them want to choose wrong things. You might say:

  • “Sometimes inside us, there is a part that makes us want to do things that aren’t good, like being selfish, angry, or not listening to God. That part is called sin.”

  • “It’s like having a little trouble inside that makes it hard to do what’s right.”

This helps children realize sin isn’t just about a few mistakes, but a deep problem in our hearts.

Share How Jesus Changes Our Nature

The good news is that Jesus doesn’t just forgive us for the wrong things we do; He can take away that broken part inside and give us a new heart! You can explain:

  • “Jesus loves you so much that He died and came back to life so He could take away that bad part inside you and make you new.”

  • “When you believe in Jesus, He gives you a brand new heart that wants to love God and others.”

Use Simple, Loving Words

Keep it gentle and easy to understand:

  • “God made us to be good and to love Him.”

  • “But because of sin, we have this trouble inside.”

  • “Jesus fixes that trouble by giving us a new heart.”

  • “When you trust Jesus, He changes you from the inside out.”

Invite the Child to Trust Jesus

Encourage them to pray something like:

“Jesus, I know I have this trouble inside me called sin. Thank You for loving me and making me new. Please take away the bad part and give me a new heart to love You.”

Reinforce Ongoing Growth

Explain that becoming like Jesus is a journey as He helps us grow and live in this new way:

  • “Jesus will help you every day to be kind, loving, and good.”

  • “You can talk to Him anytime and ask Him to help you.”

Why This Matters

Helping a child understand that salvation is about Jesus changing their heart, not just saying sorry, lays a foundation for a real, lasting relationship with God. It’s not just fixing mistakes but becoming a new person with God’s help.
